Kroka Expeditions Energy Dashboard

Marlow, NH

Linnean worked with Kroka Expeditions to develop a dashboard for their newly renovated farmhouse building, which has been retrofitted for energy performance. Kroka is an educational organization that seeks to cultivate leadership, place-based learning, and an understanding of natural systems, so their hopes for a building dashboard went beyond simply reporting data in a chart or graph. They sought an organization of this data that would enable real-time education and decision making by any number of the staff or student leaders with regard to energy usage—or production.

In collaboration with Kroka staff, Linnean installed the appropriate hardware and sensors after a thorough discovery period. Once data streams were identified, an iterative design process organized the data, and a graphical interface was added to make the dashboard engaging, user friendly, and most importantly, informative.

Kroka’s building had several systems that were all working together, including a gasification boiler, solar generation of energy and hot water, and operational energy. This made for a complicated system to both manage or explain. The dashboard has made once opaque operations much more transparent, allowing all users of the building to make better decisions in pursuit of the school’s culture of living more lightly on the land.
